Friday Fun ~ Book Review on Insurgent's Journal by Don A. Martinez

Well, I did it again on Read it and Reap. I won. Not one but two books. Insurgent's Journal and Infernal Eighteen by Don A Martinez. With all that's been going on this month so far I only got one read and that's Insurgent's Journal. Sorry Don and Tara. <sigh>Real life just got in my way starting with my husband going into congestive heart failure. But today is the deadline and I'd be remiss if I didn't  post something.

The Synopsis
The United States is no more. The New Empire of America holds power now.

The people of the former U.S.A now live in the "glory" of President-for-Life Carleton Regent, his wife and Vice President Jennifer, and the immensely powerful Supernatural Suppression Agency.

Their goal: eliminate all supernaturals!

A victim of the SSA's purges is Alanna Sharpe, now missing her supernatural parents Ariel and Cole. Summoned by her parents' former ally Gabe Francis, she takes the burden of her Sharpe birthright ... the Sword of the Guardsman.

Gabe presents Alanna with a quest. To save her parents, she must bring down the New Empire of America!

Alanna pushes forth against the SSA and its field commander, General Tyrelius Scolar. But will Alanna be prepared for the haunting secret behind the rise of Scolar, the SSA, and the New Empire?

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Impressions
A tightly woven story with well defined characters. Martinez breathes life into the characters where the reader is carried step by step through the maze of the world he's created. In this he's created a nonstop roller coaster ride of intrigue, plots within plots, and almost insurmountable hurdles in his main character's quest to find her parents.

The journals are being translated with the use of magical glasses worn by an exiled writer which when he intrudes is a bit jarring. Told in first person, like most journals are written, is not my preferred reading, but I found this book action packed with very little lulls to catch a breath. It is a blow by blow accounting, literally.

Is it believable and can I suspense my disbelief for the 164- page journey, yep it did. Would I recommend this book to others? I have already. Grab your copy HERE. A bargain at any price, but $0.99 it's a steal.
